I have an app that refers to a serial no xxxxx. This serial no also appears in a spreadsheet. I want to get the value on col3 of the same row where that serial number is and if the serial no. is missing report on that and not get the value as it can't be done.

Is there a "smart" way to do this?

Could you eloborate a little more ?

Is the spreadsheet coming from application and is it an excel sheet?
If I understand correctly,you are searching for the SN row in spreadsheet and and  from SN row you want to retrieve the value of the Col3 and check that value against DB?

Its quite possible .
